Nyall Farrell
Nyall Farrell is an Irish artist who returned to Ireland in 2019 after many years abroad to realise his long-held ambition to paint full time. Based in Kinsale, Nyall is intrigued by the seas and coastline and especially the ways in which the land and sea connect and the ways in which people look to inhabit, exploit and experience those places.
“I’m interested in looking, through my paintings, at those special places where the land meets the sea and the ways in which we are both drawn to and yet fear the sea and the power it has to erode all our efforts to create life and colonise that frontier.
My paintings seek to evoke an atmosphere, a feeling or just a memory of special moments spent in that place.”
After 40 years of working in Ireland, UK and Europe, Nyall decided to take the plunge and swap life in business for one in the arts. To prepare for this, Nyall spent 2019 studying under Martin Kinnear at the Norfolk School of Painting and has built up a repertoire of classical and modern styles and techniques which he is now putting to use. The philosophy at the Norfolk School is that you need to understand the rules and techniques so that you can then break them.
I plan to travel along the Wild Atlantic Way over the next few years, exploring, learning about and painting this wild and rugged coastline.#
My work is currently on display at The Boathouse Gallery in Kinsale https://www.theboathousegallery.ie/ and I have just completed a solo exhibition at the Grey Heron gallery in Bandon @greyheronwestcork
